  • Growing the Beard: While by no means poorly received, the first season was seen as a mixed bag by some. The second and final seasons were seen more warmly by critics, who felt the show's comedy and drama improved substantially.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The fact that this was Hailee Steinfeld's first regular starring role in a television series attracted many who had been impressed with her performances in True Grit, the Pitch Perfect franchise, and Bumblebee. And that's without even getting into her die hard fans.
  • LGBT Fanbase: The romance between Emily and Sue attracted a lot of lesbian and bisexual women due to the fact that the relationship was established in the first episode, rather than the showrunners dragging their feet to the romance like how other shows handle their gay subplots. The fact that Hailee Steinfeld, who already has a pretty sizeable queer fanbase, is in a lead role and wears a lot of elegant outfits certainly helped matters.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • When Emily witnesses Sue and Sam having an affair at the end of "I'm Nobody! Who are you?". The scene is sad not only because Emily has feelings for both parties, but also because of Emily's sympathy for her brother.
    • Emily's confession of this affair to Austin in the next episode, especially when he tells her that he's known about it for weeks. She also ends up telling Austin about Sue's miscarriage, which further devastates him, and he confesses to Emily that he feels like a failure in all aspects of his life. This turns into a heartwarming moment at the end, though, when Emily comforts Austin as he cries and tells him how much she (and the rest of the family) needs him.
  • The Woobie: Austin becomes this in the second season. While he appears successful on the outside, it's revealed that he is deeply unhappy and dissatisfied with how his life has turned out. He desperately wants children, which Sue does not want to give him, and he feels neglected while she is primarily concerned with parties and social status. This is not to mention the fact that Sue is cheating on him, which he knows about but is resigned to. When Emily tells him about Sue's miscarriage, he breaks down and cries, confessing to Emily how he feels like he can do nothing right.
