- Alas, Poor Scrappy: Kamishiro is killed in such an abrupt and cruel manner that it's hard not to feel bad when it happens, even if he had been a complete sex offender. The fact that the previous scene showed that he actually was a pretty decent guy who just wanted to be acknowledged for who he was as a person helped his case a lot.
- Fanon:
- There's nothing in the actual story to suggest it, but it's frequently suspected that Ryoko Otonashi is Junko's real name. All things considered, this does actually fit.
- A lot of fans like the idea that Matsuda was the doctor who was treating Nagito Komaeda for his frontotemporal dementia, despite the fact that the two seemingly have never met.
- Slow-Paced Beginning: The first volume, while full of intrigue, is mostly rather slow and plodding. The second half picks up the pace considerably and is much better for it.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The mood is relentlessly bleak, most of the characters bar Ryoko are either unlikable or die quickly and the story is basically written as a Foregone Conclusion. This makes it hard for some people to care.
