* TooBleakStoppedCaring: The mood is relentlessly bleak, most of the characters bar Ryouko are either unlikable or die quickly and the story is basically written as a ForegoneConclusion. This makes it hard for some people to care.

* AlasPoorScrappy: [[spoiler:Kamishiro is killed in such an abrupt and cruel manner that it's hard not to feel bad when it happens, even if he had been a complete sex offender]]. The fact that the previous scene showed that he actually was a pretty decent guy who just wanted to be acknowledged for who he was as a person helped his case a lot.

* TearJerker:
** The flashback at the start of the second volume to [[spoiler:Junko comforting Matsuda after his mother's death and promising to be his girlfriend]]. Knowing how the story ends makes it that much worse.
** Even if you disliked him beforehand, its hard not to feel when [[spoiler:Kamishiro dies]] especially given the fact that the previous scene basically was about giving him a better side.
** Really, everything to do with Junko is this from a certain point of view. As ''Anime/Danganronpa3TheEndOfHopesPeakHighSchool'' shows: [[spoiler:Junko's inclination to Despair is less to do with her nature than her ability as the Ultimate Analyst. Which is further supported by Ryouko who is, while a bit selfish and weird, completely harmless and the main factors between them is Ryouko almost never remembers her Talent and she lacks her memories as Junko. If she had literally any other Talent or if she got amnesia earlier: most of the tragedy in ''Danganronpa'' could have been avoided]].

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Ryouko and Matsuda get a lot of this, as the reveals concerning them reqire one to revaluate them in a very different light. Ryouko especially, since [[spoiler:the reveal that she's Enoshima requires one to not just revaluate Ryouko's whole character, but Enoshima's as well.]] It ultimately comes down to very important question, [[spoiler:was Enoshima's statement that she was responsible for the death of Matsuda's mother true or not?]]

* EnsembleDarkhorse: Madarai gets this to an extent as despite being Ryouko's major "antagonist" his plot is the least important to the story. [[spoiler:What makes this rather awkward is that "Madarai" is actually 8 separate characters, each barely getting any focus on their own, and "Isshiki" is the only one of them not actually met in the story as he died before the story began, but is the name his younger brothers all use by default when trying to get someone who knows what really happened to him to panic and slip up.]]

* JerkassWoobie: Matsuda, who gets introduced as a massive asshole who treats Ryouko terribly, even though there ''are'' hints he does care about her. Then we learn the full deal concerning him, [[spoiler:that he was trying to protect Ryouko ''from herself'' and was ultimately his own girlfriend's UnwittingPawn]], and he gets incredibly depressing.

** A lot of fans like the idea that Matsuda was Komaeda's doctor and treating him for his frontotemporal dementia despite the fact that the two seemingly have never met
* IdiotPlot: Absolutely no one, for a least a month, realises that:
** [[spoiler:That the boyfriend of the suspected murderer might be her accomplice and noticing the fact that she is let go immediately after he interrogates her.]]
** [[spoiler:An elaborate prison/base being built under the Reserve Course.]]
