• Complete Monster: Venna is a cruel witch with a taste for human flesh. Taking residence in a forest near the town, Venna hunted down and devoured anyone who got lost there, including children. Harshly abusing her son, Ingram, and turning him into a crow after he refused to obey her commands, Venna later on started to manipulate a "scarecrow" child, protagonist Ryo. Pretending to be gentle and kind, Venna tried to make him pour her potion upon the statue of a goddess in the town, which would allow her to take over it and slaughter and devour the entire population of the town. If Ryo refuses, Venna will try to sadistically kill him, and if Ingram tries to defend the boy, Venna tries to kill him as well, gleefully tearing his face apart as a sick joke.
• Heartwarming in Hindsight: While the librarian Ms. B from Here For Sweethearts is treated poorly by her husband and child (who only see her as an easy meal due to them being Emotion Eaters), at least she found a surrogate son in Ingram.
• Iron Woobie: Ingram, who despite being mistreated by his mother, turned into a crow for years, and separated from his beloved surrogate mother, remains strong, becoming an advisor to Ryo so he won't end up like him.
• The Un-Twist: Venna turning out to the the evil witch terrorizing the town. After basically everyone points out how obviously suspicious she is and Ryo desperately wanting to believe she isn't.
• The Woobie:
  • Ryo. He meets a seemingly kind witch who treats him well, but she is just using him to carry out a massacre on the people of Blackwood. All he wanted was a mother, dammit!
  • Ms. B. She's a librarian who just wants the lonely boy that hangs around the place to open up to her. They become close, until Venna turns him into a crow, stuck for years in circumstances that she'll probably never even hear about, much less ever get the truth.
