- Award Snub: Ryan Gosling, surprisingly, didn't get nominated for an Academy Award (though Michelle Williams was). It also failed to be nominated for Best Picture.
- Misaimed Fandom: The movie portrays a toxic, loveless marriage as not worth salvaging, no matter how painful a split would be. However, some people are more likely to overidentify with Dean and characterize him as a good husband and father who is unfairly pushed away by his wife, instead of an immature, needy, manipulative drunk who rarely takes Cindy's feelings or what's actually healthy for the relationship into consideration.
- Moral Event Horizon: Many audience members limit their sympathy for Dean when he drunkenly punches out Cindy's boss and gets her fired.
