YMMV / Batman: Zero Year

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: It took up a year's worth of comics, not including the #0, so... yeah. You'll find no shortage of people who dropped off Snyder's Batman run during this story and came back for "Endgame".
  • Broken Base: Seeing how it has replaced the beloved Year One as Batman's origins after many, many years of canonicity (until DC Rebirth restored it to canon), it's not particularly surprising that fans are divided over Year One, with many arguing over which one is the better origin story for Bats. Some prefer the noir and grounded tone of Year One and its succinct portrayal of Bruce's first year, while others prefer the more superhero approach of Zero Year and its longer story. DC would attempt to find a middle ground between these two sides by having both stories be canon, but their decision would only break the base more and kickstart additional debates over if DC's actions were a good way to appeal to both sides or a poor compromise that only makes Batman's origins messier and less cohesive than if DC only kept one as canon.
  • Complete Monster: The Joker initially emerges from the shadows as the mysterious "Red Hood One", where he recruits members in to his "Red Hood Gang" by blackmailing and threatening families and friends of middle and upper classes individuals from Gotham. Using his gang to promote his philosophy of randomness of life and pointlessness of existence, the Red Hood spreads chaos and anarchy around Gotham by robbing banks and killing people left and right. Upon becoming the Joker, he continues to spread chaos over Gotham and later starting his infamous killing sprees, torturing and killing those close to Batman.
  • Narm: The sole non-holographic bat that Bruce sees, which lands on his father's bust. It's just so small and adorable, it's a wonder Bruce even thought of using fear tactics.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Good lord, Dr. Death's new design here is horrifying.
