YMMV / Age of Empires Online

Go To

  • Broken Base: The artstyle— some people don't mind the cartoon graphics while others prefer more realistic looking RTS games. The MMORPG-style gameplay mechanics are another point of contention.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Governor Zopyrus (a Persian rich nobleman, albeit he's Babylonian here instead) is a minor historical figure that is one of the ingame advisors but has become very popular among the fans, almost becoming an official mascot of sorts. He appears prominently on the promotional artworks facing against other historical figures, also featured on the installation and loading screen, and even one of the Project Celeste forum administrators has him as their profile avatar because of his popularity in the community.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Could arguably be this for the original Age of Empires I games, considering how it's outdated and simplified compared to its sequels (Age of Empires: Online currently lacks several historically important civilizations like the Kushites, Carthage, the Hittites and Shang dynasty China; though it has the Celts and Indians). However the game still had to go through alot of problems during its lifespan before getting revived by fans, as seen here.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: People dislike several changes to the series' formula so they avoid this game without giving it a try. While it's true Age of Empires Online has had a Troubled Production and subsequently has been shut down, it's still a very well-made solid game worth playing, especially after the Project Celeste team had it revived and significantly improved.
