Wrestling / Super Smash Bros. Slamfest '99

Go To

One of the strangest (and most coveted) events in the history of Nintendo, Super Smash Bros. Slamfest '99, also known as Super Smash Bros. LIVE and simply Slamfest '99, was a wrestling match held between two tag-teams of costumed characters: Mario and Yoshi on one side and Donkey Kong and Pikachu on the other, made to promote the North American release of Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64.

Today, the match is most infamous for the fact it was never archived at all, leading to it becoming one of the biggest searches for lost media. Further helped by the fact that, unlike other popular subjects, such as A Day with SpongeBob SquarePants or Saki Sanobashi, it's actually been proven to exist.

Slamfest '99 provides example of the following tropes:

  • Face: Mario and Yoshi, at least at the beginning of the match before the latter went crazy.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Mario, in the middle of the match, betrays Yoshi and starts attacking him as well as Donkey Kong and Pikachu.
  • Heel: Donkey Kong (who makes sense for this role) and Pikachu, of all characters.
  • Tastes Like Chicken: According to one source, the referee took a bite out of Pikachu's ear and declared that their meat tasted like this.
  • Token Human: Mario is the only human fighter.
  • Win-Win Ending: The match ended with every opponent being declared a winner, with two sources saying that this was due to the quartet knocking each other out and another simply saying they all wound up the best of friends by the end of it.
