  • Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman were considered for the role of David.
  • Bergman wanted Liv Ullmann to play Karin, but she was unavailable and so it went to Bibi Andersson. She wasn't very happy with being second choice, but felt she couldn't turn down an offer from Bergman.
