The Welles film

  • Deleted Scene: An early scene showing a meeting of Mary and Rankin was filmed but removed. She finds him in the woods, looking at the incongruous 16th-century Gothic clock in the town square, and tells him it was "brought by sailing ship from the shores of the Mediterranean" by one of her ancestors. Rankin is familiar with the clock and her family's history, and as they walk through the cemetery he notes the many Longstreets who are buried there and their patriotic service.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Orson Welles originally wanted Agnes Moorehead to play the investigator, believing that "it would be much more interesting to have a spinster lady on the heels of this Nazi." The studio had him go with Edward G. Robinson instead.
    • Welles originally wanted John Huston to direct, but Huston entered the military, so Welles ended up directing it himself.
    • Among the cut scenes was an extended version of Meinike being tailed by secret agents as he detoured through Latin America on his way to Harper, where a female agent is mauled to death by attack dogs owned by hiding Nazis.

The Camus novel & its adaptation

  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The film has never had an official home video or streaming release, nor has it been broadcast on TV, due to complicated rights issues. Camus' daughter apparently disliked the film, trying to have it pulled from circulation. Consequently, it's only watchable through rare repertory screenings, or low-quality bootlegs.
  • Referenced by...:
    • "Killing an Arab" by The Cure is about the events in the novel.
    • In Limbus Company, one of the Sinners (who are all literary references) is called Meursault, a tall, stoic frenchman who speaks in short, curt sentences and doesn't understand the emotions and drives of people around him. He's satisfied simply following orders to the letter.
