Trivia / The Shadow Pulps S 5 Gangdoms Doom

Go To

  • Development Gag/Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Again, as in The Living Shadow, mention is made of The Shadow broadcasting a radio show on Thursday nights, which just happened to be when the Real Life Detective Story Hour hosted by James LaCurto as... you know who... aired. This radio show prompted the creation of The Shadow Magazine and early stories published during the original run of the show mentioned this.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: By and large, Shadow editor John Nanovic did not want "ethnic" villains of the type that were rampant in the pulps, mostly so that the appeal of The Shadow could spread to beyond a WASP readership base. However, given the Roman à Clef nature of Gangdom's Doom, it was hard to avoid having Italian and Irish mobsters as villains.
  • Executive Meddling: Claude Fellowes was killed on the orders of John Nanovic, the editor for The Shadow magazine, as he thought there needed to be an It's Personal moment to spur The Shadow into action. The murder occurred over Gibson's objection. Very soon after, Gibson introduced the almost completely indistinguishable Rutlidge Mann to fill Fellowes' position in The Shadow's network of agents.
