Trivia / The Seven Minutes

Go To

  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: In the novel, the author of The Seven Minutes is revealed to be Senator Thomas Bainbridge, the political rival of the prosecutor's patron. In the film, the author is revealed to be a woman. In both versions, the author's motivations and their defense of the book are the same.
  • Adaptational Name Change: From Jeffrey Griffith in the novel to Jerry in the film.
  • Box Office Bomb: The film's financial failure ruined any good will Meyer had gained with the big studios and drove him back to independent film-making (though by most accounts, he was happier that way).
  • Creator's Oddball: A serious courtroom drama from sexplotation meister Russ Meyer. He does manage to squeeze in some instances of his brand of Fanservice, but not nearly to the extent of his other films. Meyer would later comment that "attaching my name to that film was a bummer. It does a great disservice to everyone concerned."
  • Follow-Up Failure: After scoring big with Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, The Seven Minutes was quite a drastic step down. The film's failure is mostly credited to it being very unlike the usual Meyer fare.
  • Very Loosely Based on a True Story: The novel and subsequent film were based on the 1963 case New York v. Bookcase, Inc., in which a New York bookseller was arrested for providing a copy of Fanny Hill to a sixteen-year-old girl. During the trial, it was revealed that the lawsuit was orchestrated by Operation Yorksville, an anti-pornography organization that sent the young girl to purchase the book as part of a sting operation to have it banned.
