  • Disowned Adaptation: Giorgio Bassani, who wrote the novel the film's based on, tried to distance himself from the adaptation and removed his screenwriter's credit. He was dissatisfied with how the film made Micòl's relationship with Giampiero explicit, which he thought changed the tone of the story and spoiled Micòl's character.
  • Fake Nationality: Helmut Berger (Alberto) is Austrian, Dominique Sanda (Micòl) is French, and Barbara Pilavin (Ms. di Giorgio) is American.
  • Playing Against Type: Fabio Testi, an actor best known for Spaghetti Westerns and other B-Movies, playing a morally-grey romantic foil in an Oscar Bait prestige drama.
  • Uncredited Role: Bill Conti worked on the score (one of his first) without credit.
