Trivia / The Doom Generation

  • Acting in the Dark: Rose McGowan had no idea what half the slang actually meant, especially the sexual references.
  • Dawson Casting: The teenage leads are played by Rose McGowan (22) and James Duval (23).
  • Hostility on the Set: In her autobiography, Rose McGowan revealed that one of her co-stars sexually assaulted her by putting a water bottle up her skirt and pressing it against her vagina - and Gregg Araki laughed it off. She did however say the actor later apologised.
  • Money, Dear Boy: Rose McGowan took the role because she desperately needed the money, and was in danger of becoming homeless.
  • Production Posse: James Duval stars in Gregg Araki's other two films in the Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy - Totally F***ed Up and Nowhere. Rose McGowan also has a cameo in the latter.
  • Star-Making Role: Despite the low Box Office take, Rose McGowan was brought to national attention for the film - getting a Spirit Award nomination.
  • Troubled Production: The first day's worth of shooting was actually ruined and rendered unusable in a lab accident, and the production also suffered when the Northridge earthquake struck. Rose McGowan was also dealing with her boyfriend's death five weeks before filming, though she admitted it helped her understand her character (giving her a "disaffected quality"). The ending was also shot over five days in a cold dirty warehouse infested with rats, which Gregg Araki described as "torturous".
  • What Could Have Been: Jordan Ladd was originally cast as Amy, but her mother vetoed her at the last minute. The end credits contains a "no thanks" to Cheryl Ladd as a result. Gregg Araki later became friends with her, and Jordan starred in his next film Nowhere.
