  • Development Gag: Cal Hudson's off-screen death. Behr had originally killed Hudson at the end of "The Maquis, Part 2", only to be overridden by Michael Piller. The co-showrunner didn't want to bump off another recurring character at that time (though Piller later conceded in retrospect that Behr's storytelling instincts had been right and Hudson should've died). After three Seasons, and as the final Maquis episode of DS9, Behr finally got the chance to kill Hudson.
  • Life Imitates Art: In 2002, several years after this episode mentioned Eddington's "lucky loonie," the phrase entered Real Life: a loonie was surreptitiously embedded in the ice at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, and both the men's and women's Canadian hockey teams went on to win gold. Since then, loonies have made their way into the ice at other international competitions, and the Royal Canadian Mint has produced "lucky loonies" before each subsequent Olympics.
  • Recycled Set: Eddington's Holding Cell at the beginning of the episode is a redress of the Star Trek: Voyager Brig set.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Ira Behr's admitted this was a driving factor in ending the Maquis storyline here and now. With the Dominion War storyline about to commence, Behr was desperate to tie off loose ends going into the following Season to give the War their full focus. The Maquis drew the short straw.
