Trivia / Shining in the Darkness

Go To

  • Humble Beginnings: Shining in the Darkness was never really intended to be one of Sega's noteworthy franchises, with them giving the developers the bare minimum budget in order to make a game to pad out the Sega Genesis' ,at the time, rather thin JRPG catalog. Eventually, the world would be revisited when the developer wanted to make a competitor to Nintendo's Fire Emblem, which resulted in Shining Force, and the rest was history.
  • No Budget: The developer behind the game admitted to as much in an interview in 2009. Sega only gave them the bare minimum budget offered to out-of-house developers, which would explain why there are so many Palette Swap assets in the game.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The Gelflings in this installment were replaced by the similar (possibly same?) Kyantols in future Shining games. Because both races share strong similarities with the Gelflings seen in The Dark Crystal, this change was likely done to avoid legal trouble with Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
