  • Executive Meddling:
    • Depending on who you ask, the creator of the original game, George Fan, was either fired because of disagreeing with the Freemium motto or normally layed off.
    • According to an interview with Matt Johnston, the producer of the game, the free-to-play status was instructed by PopCap higher-ups, which resulted in the creation of the Plant Food mechanic.
  • No Export for You: The Chinese version of the game, with an alternate progression model, a large collection of exclusive plants, and several new worlds, is not available internationally.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: The game is semi-frequently a target of hoaxes regarding upcoming plants, usually constructed using assets stolen from the Plants vs. Zombies Character Creator fanon wiki. The most common victim of this kind of hoax is as of writing Submerge-mint, likely due to the highly convincing simulation of the game's art style and interface present in the article.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Rotten Red was a plant from the Chinese version that PopCap Shanghai implemented as a Make-A-Wish Contribution for a child named Miles, whose wish was to become an honorary designer at the main Western branch. However, it was quickly discovered that neither his family nor Make-a-Wish allowed for Rotten Red to exist outside of the video PopCap had made to document the whole thing, so the plant was swiftly removed and replaced with Dual Pistol Pinecone, a Suspiciously Similar Substitute.
  • Similarly Named Works: Or rather, similarly subtitled works. This game shares the "It's About Time" subtitle (and pun) with Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. Both being anticipated sequels to beloved games, and both are themed around traveling through space-time.
  • What Could Have Been: The series' page includes examples from this game.
