Trivia / Parachutes

Go To

  • Black Sheep Hit: "Yellow" pretty much could be considered this for the album as a whole, as while most of Parachutes is a melancholic indie rock album, "Yellow" by contrast is a loud mid-tempo Britpop-inspired song dominated by Jonny Buckland's distorted guitar riff.
  • Breakthrough Hit: Thanks to "Yellow".
  • Creator Backlash: According to Chris, the band has collectively disowned Parachutes as "terrible music", save for fan favorites such as "Yellow". However, they haven't completely turned their back on the album; when "Sparks", a Parachutes song considered by fans to be one of the band's greatest deep cuts, won a YouTube Community poll for songs fans wanted to hear them perform, they were happy to oblige.
  • Colbert Bump: The constant use of "Sparks" on TikTok led to the song shoot in popularity in the 2020s, becoming their most popular deep cut on streaming services.
  • In Memoriam: The album was dedicated to Will's mother, Sara Champion, a notable archaeologist who died of cancer in May of 2000.
  • Shrug of God: The band members rarely give specific explanations of a song's meaning (though they love to give fake ones). For example, Chris says that he doesn't know what "Yellow" is about, while Jonny jokes that it's about bananas.
  • What Could Have Been: The songs originally recorded in the sessions of The Blue Room with Chris Allisonnote  were originally intended to be the band's debut. Although complications with Allison direction and Will being sacked from the band for a few days before being invited to rejoin led the band to abandon the sessions and record the album with Ken Nelson months later.
