Trivia / Owl City

Go To

  • Breakthrough Hit: "Fireflies" was what got him on the map. Even though, as mentioned below, he is a mainstream One-Hit Wonder, he still maintains a healthy career and dedicated fanbase.
  • Fan Community Nickname: Hoot Owls, or the less commonly used Owl Citizens.
  • Follow the Leader: Ocean Eyes has sometimes been critically summarized as a failed attempt at making the second Postal Service album.
  • One-Hit Wonder: He technically has two hits, as "Good Time," his collaboration with Carly Rae Jepsen, went to #8 and 2x Platinum in America. However, because it was released at the peak of Jepsen's popularity and more than two years after "Fireflies," it was seen as first and foremost Jepsen's song and was quickly forgotten after its peak anyway. Owl City remains known only for "Fireflies" to the general public.
    • Chart expert and music writer Chris Molanphy wrote a piece for the Village Voice on rules that could be used to define one hit wonders, and used Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's success with "Good Time" as a specific example. Like Owl City, Carly Rae Jepsen is usually regarded as a one-hit wonder for 2012's "Call Me Maybe" despite the second hit.
