  • Creator Backlash: In a 2016 interview, Collins stated that he doesn't look back on this album fondly. According to him, he found the album too depersonalized in retrospect, feeling that he was "only [playing] a bit part in that one" rather than making material that truly captured who he was as a person.
  • Permanent Placeholder: According to Collins, the title phrase in "Sussudio" was a nonsense phrase that he came up while figuring out the song's melody (taking a page from former Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel), and he never found a replacement lyric that sounded quite as appealing.
  • Pop-Culture Urban Legends: There are several theories as to where the title of "Sussudio" came from. Some claim that it was the name of a pony that Phil's daughter had, while others claim he got the title from someone (such as his daughter or an employee) mispronouncing the word "studio". The truth is much more mundane: it was a piece of gibberish that he improvised, and he liked the way it sounded. It was actually meant to be a placeholder lyric, but he never found another word that worked just as well.
  • Referenced by...: In American Psycho, Patrick Bateman gushes about "Sussudio" to a pair of prostitutes before banging them to the tune of the song.

Miscellaneous:

  • This was the first CD manufactured by Specialty Records Corporation, a Warner Music Group-owned LP pressing plant that the company converted into their first and primary in-house CD maker. The earliest discs were made with glass masters from one of Warner's previous go-to CD manufacturers, PolyGram, which reportedly took 36 attempts before Specialty got something that could actually be used. Specialty would continue using PolyGram's glass masters for their first few CDs before quickly switching to making their own.
