- Ability over Appearance: Arden would have been Irish initially - as Irish actors were tested for the part. British George Webster was chosen and the character was rewritten to be half-English.

- Doing It for the Art: All one hundred extras did the group nude scene on the beach for free.
- Playing with Character Type: Emily is Evanna Lynch playing Luna Lovegood for as much dark drama as possible. Like Luna, Emily has a Missing Mom, a Cloud Cuckoo Lander writer for a father, is a loner at school and is just generally weird. However, the father is in a mental hospital and Emily suffers from depression. Whereas Luna is portrayed as lovably odd, Emily's quirkiness is a dark example of her utter detachment from reality. Evanna even acknowledged the comparison in an interview.
- Real-Life Relative: Emily as a baby is played by Simon Fitzmaurice's own children.
- Real Life Writes the Plot: Simon Fitzmaurice started writing the film before he was diagnosed. As such the themes were heavily influenced by him facing the possibility that he would only live for three or four more years.
