  • Acting for Two: Happens a lot in the German dub:
    • Susanne Beck voices Lucy-May and Clara.
    • Reinhilt Schneider voices Kate, Annie and Tob.
    • Sven Dahlem voices Ben and Lehrer McKenzie.
    • In the Iranian dub, Fariba Shahin-Moghadam voices Kate and the narrator.
  • Anime First: An odd case. It was based on a children's novel, but after the anime aired, AMZ published a book titled Lucy-May's Extraordinary Adventures in Australia. It summarizes the anime's events with still images.
  • Channel Hop: In Italy, the anime was first broadcast on Italia 1, and then Hiro.
  • Children Voicing Children: Candidates for the roles of Lucy-May and the other child characters were invited from children's theater companies and the general public, and were selected through auditions from over 60 people. In the end, all of them were voiced by adult actors, except Tob Popple, who was voiced by Mie Suzuki (who was 8 at the time).
  • Completely Different Title:
    • French: Karine, l'aventure du Nouveau Monde (Karine, and the adventure of the New World).
    • German: Lucy in Australien (Lucy in Australia).
    • Farsi: مهاجران (Migration).
    • Korean: 말괄량이 루시 (Tomboy Lucy).
  • Life Imitates Art: This anime inspired some Iranians to immigrate to Australia - no, really.
During our interview, I asked the two couples how they came to be in Adelaide and an unexpected link emerged.

They told me that in Iran, most people know Adelaide because of a Japanese cartoon series from the early 1980s called Lucy-May of the Southern Rainbow.

“In the cartoon there was a family who came to Adelaide from England. They came to Adelaide and settled here, so I can remember Adelaide from my childhood,” says Farhad.

“They were a family with kids and their neighbour’s dog,” adds Omid. “And moved to Adelaide by ship.”

“So,” says Farhad, “If you say to someone in Iran ‘We are going to Adelaide’ they can tell you about that cartoon series as well.”
  • What Could Have Been: Lucy was suppose to be an older sister to Kate based on the show's concept art. Their roles were later reversed in the final product.

General Trivia

  • This was originally the only World Masterpiece Theater work that was produced when the author of the book it was based on was still alive, until Konnichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables got produced in 2009, with the two series sharing that designation.
