- Executive Meddling: Michael Keaton was originally cast as Jack, when the intention was to kill him off in the first episode. However, ABC insisted that the show not kill off its lead actor, and Keaton withdrew as he didn't want to be attached to a full series.

- Originally, Jack was to be a Decoy Protagonist played by a "name" actor, with Michael Keaton being considered, and then killed off by the Monster. Kate would then take charge of the survivors.
- Yunjin Kim originally auditioned for Kate.
- Charlie was originally intended to be an aging rock star from the 80s, but Dominic Monaghan's audition as Sawyer convinced the creators to change him to a younger, more recent One-Hit Wonder burnout.
- Sawyer was originally intended to be a slick, suit-wearing city conman, but Josh Holloway forgot his line during the audition, causing him to kick a chair and swear profusely, leading him to become a darker Southern grifter.
- Jorge Garcia auditioned for Sawyer.
- Dominic Monaghan wrote a song for Drive Shaft called "Photos and Plans."
