Trivia / Funeral in Berlin

Go To

  • B-Team Sequel: Sidney J. Furie didn't return as director due to not getting on with producer Harry Saltzman on the first film, so Guy Hamilton, who had just directed Goldfinger for Saltzman, took over.
  • Fake Russian: Colonel Stok is played by Oskar Homolka, an Austrian actor who was often typecast as Dirty Communists.
  • Fake Nationality: German actress Eva Renzi plays an Israeli spy.
  • The Other Darrin: In the European French dub, Michel Roux replaced Dominique Paturel as Harry Palmer.
  • The Other Marty:
    • Akim Tamiroff was originally cast as Colonel Stok, but fell ill, and was replaced by Oskar Homolka.
    • Anjanette Comer was originally cast as Samantha Steel, and even appeared in the publicity stills. But due to illness, Comer had to back out, and Eva Renzi ended up in the role.
    • Irish actor Max Adrian was originally cast as Hallam and was included in early production material, but replaced before filming by Hugh Burden. For years to come, Adrian was incorrectly listed in the cast by reference books.
  • Romance on the Set: Deadly enemies in the movie, Paul Hubschmid (Johnny Vulkan) and Eva Renzi (Samantha Steel) became a couple, and married the following year.
  • Troubled Production: Russian soldiers on the east side of the Berlin Wall purposely disrupted filming by using mirrors to reflect sunlight into the cameras. The scene where Harry Palmer walks to Checkpoint Charlie for the first time had to be filmed from a long distance for that reason.
  • Write What You Know: According to Michael Caine, Guy Hamilton would make on-set improvisations to the script based on his own personal experiences working for British military intelligence during World War II.
  • You Look Familiar: David Glover (Chico) and Freda Bamford (Alice) played different characters in The Ipcress File.
