Go To

  • Cast the Runner-Up: Miriam Hopkins was originally cast as Muriel Carew, but Director Rouben Mamoulian convinced her that the part of Ivy Pierson was the better role. The part of Muriel went to Rose Hobart.
  • Channel Hop: The film was purchased by MGM from Paramount; MGM then recalled every print they could find in order to avoid competition with their upcoming 1941 remake. They are now both owned by Warner Bros., and are sometimes packaged together.
  • Star-Making Role: This movie (and the resulting Academy Award) rose Fredric March from a minor comedy actor to a major player in Hollywood.
  • Stunt Double: Fredric March's stunts were performed by Chick Collins.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • John Barrymore, who had made a big comeback in the 1920 silent version, was offered the leading role in this film but turned it down.
    • Irving Pichel was originally considered for the title role, but Rouben Mamoulian rejected it, wanting an actor who can be convincingly Jekyll as well as Hyde.
    • Miriam Hopkins was originally casted as Muriel.
