• Dawson Casting:
  • The real John Chisum was 54 at the time of the events in the film, whereas John Wayne was 62.
  • Cattle baron John Tunstall was 24 when he was murdered; he was played by the 57-year-old Patric Knowles.
  • Richard Jaeckel was 43 when he played Jesse Evans, who would have been 24 at the time of the events depicted in the film.
  • Geoffrey Deuel was 27 at the release of the movie. Billy the Kid was 18 or 19 at the start of the Lincoln County War in 1879. The war lasted until 1881. Billy was killed that year at the age of 21.
• Real-Life Relative: John Wayne's son Michael produced the film.
• Recycled Set: Chisum's ranch house would be re-used a year later for the house in Big Jake with white siding added to the exterior.
• Romance on the Set: Although they met some time earlier, Christopher George and Lynda Day George fell in love and later married after working on this project.
• Stunt Double: Jim Burk doubled for Forrest Tucker in part of the final fight scene.
