This timeline is still under construction and may be subject to changes at any point. Most of the dates are based on ones established in the story and calculated accordingly, though this should obviously not be seen as a timeline for the canon series. All spoilers are unmarked.

1600's
  • Sometime in the early Edo Period, Saigou Yukiuji helps a Shinigami and in return, he is granted supernatural abilities to help people. These abilities will be passed down through his bloodline.

1815

  • The Towa Ironworks factory is founded. Its founder and chairman, Tokushige Towa, was renowned for establishing one new business every 20 days from age 30 until his death at 64.

1868

  • The Empire of Japan is formed under Emperor Meiji.

1881

  • Izuru Kamukura is born.

1894

  • August 1: The Sino-Japanese War begins.

1895

  • April 17: The Sino-Japanese war ends in a Japanese victory. The Korean peninsula is transferred into the Japanese sphere of influence and the Chinese Qing Dynasty begins a steady decline.
  • May 29: Japanese forces invade the island of Taiwan and are met with heavy resistance.
  • October 21: Taiwan is annexed into the Empire of Japan.

1910

  • The works of Thomas Galton, Yamanouchi Shige, John Coulter, Charles Davenport, and other eugenicists rapidly gain popularity in Japan.
  • August 22: Korea is annexed into the Empire of Japan.

1912

  • The Qing dynasty falls and the Republic of China is established.

1923

  • September 1: The Great Kanto Earthquake occurs, killing more than 100,000 people.

1927

  • August 1: The Chinese Civil War begins between the Nationalists and the Communists.

1928

  • January 28: Kazuo Tengan is born.
  • December 21: Blood Purity Day is celebrated for the first time.

1931

  • September 18: The Mukden Incident is staged by Japan as a False Flag Operation to justify an invasion of China. A small quantity of dynamite is detonated on a railroad line owned by Japan's South Manchuria Railway. While far too weak to destroy the rail, the event is blamed on Chinese dissidents and Manchuria is invaded by the Kwangtung army.

1932

  • March: The Republic of Manchukuo is established as a puppet state in Manchuria.

1933

  • March: Japan withdraws from the league of nations.

1935

  • February: Izuru Kamukura writes a letter to Emperor Hirohito explaining his plans to create the ultimate hope for all of mankind, one that would secure the global dominance of Japan and the Greater East-Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. All he would need was roughly 5 million yen (the equivalent of 90.6 million yen in 2016) and a facility to manage it all. Hirohito agreed on the condition that it contribute to maintaining order within the empire

1936

1937

  • June 30: Hope’s Peak Academy is founded in Tokyo. While the school officially exists to find the talented youths of Japan and provide them with a guarantee for success, it doubles as a research facility to study talent.
  • July 7: The Second Sino-Japanese war begins.

1939

  • September 1: World War II begins as Nazi Germany invades Poland.

1941

  • March: The Hope’s Peak steering committee begins colluding with Unit-731, acquiring aspects of their research to help them study talent.
  • July 26: The United States establishes an embargo on Japan, cutting off 90% of their oil supply.
  • December 7: Japanese planes bomb the American naval fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing 2,300 people. In response, the United States declares war on Japan.

1945

  • May 8: Germany surrenders, ending the war in Europe.
  • August 6: Little Boy is dropped over Hiroshima. The city is destroyed and thousands are killed or irradiated.
  • August 9: Three days later, a second plane drops Fat Man over Nagasaki. On the same day, Soviet forces invade Manchukuo.
  • August 15: Japan surrenders, ending World War II. All territories outside the Japanese archipelago are relinquished. Izuru Kamukura publicly decries this decision, stating that “everyone who supported our surrender deserves to be dragged into the street and shot. Repeatedly.”
  • August 28: Japan is occupied by the United States.
  • December: Korea is divided along the 38th parallel.

1946

  • March 31: The Chinese Civil War starts up again, with the balance of power now shifted in favor of the communists.
  • May 3: While many Japanese leaders are persecuted for war crimes, Izuru and the Steering Committee’s connection and involvement are kept secret, and they are even allowed to continue their experiments provided they assist the west in stopping the spread of communism.
  • September 3: The United States conducts Operation Paperclip, recruiting 1,600 Nazi scientists, technicians, and other specialists to help them against the Soviet Union.

1947

  • May 3: The new constitution for the State of Japan goes into effect.

1949

  • October 1: The People's Republic of China is established by Mao Zedong. Two million Nationalist forces flee to Taiwan.
  • December 2: Fuhito Kirigiri is born.

1952

  • February 24: Aloysius Pennyworth is born.

1954

  • August 10: Toranosuke Ishimaru is born.

1963

  • November 22: United States President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Umeko Hayase goes back in time to prove whether or not there was only one shooter involved.

1964

  • October 10: The Summer Olympics are held in Tokyo, the first time the Games are ever held in Asia. Many of the athletes are graduates from Hope’s Peak, who go on to earn Japan 32 gold medals.

1967

  • January 7: Paul McCartney is killed in a car accident. The former Ultimate Impostor takes on his identity.

1968

  • Japan surpasses West Germany as the second-largest economic power in the world. Many attribute this achievement to the successful graduates from Hope’s Peak Academy who now occupy many positions of political and financial power.

1969

  • January: Izuru Kamukura steps down from his position as headmaster of Hope’s Peak due to failing health. He appoints Kazuo Tengan as his successor.
  • April: Tengan allows the first foreign students to attend the 32nd class. This decision sparks protests throughout the country, though the practice was gradually normalized. Toranosuke attends the 32nd class as the Ultimate Manager.
  • July 16: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to set foot on the moon.

1974

  • June: Despite recently graduating from Hope’s Peak Academy’s 35th class, Toranosuke rapidly rises through the ranks of government with his natural intellect, becoming Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief Cabinet Secretary.
  • October 13: Izuru Kamukura dies of a cerebral aneurysm, aged 93. A copper statue is erected of him in front of Hope’s Peak.

1976

  • June 6: Mitsuru Nakamura is born.
  • October 14: Takaaki Ishimaru is born.

1977

  • July 9: Hiroko Hagakure is born.

1979

  • June 1: The Jabberwock Island resort opens to the public.
  • November 4: Iranian students and demonstrators overrun the American embassy in Tehran, taking 52 people hostage.
  • November 8: Taichi Fujisaki is born.

1980

  • April 24: Negotiations between America and Iran fail. In response, President Jimmy Carter orders Operation Eagle Claw to rescue the hostages. Two operatives on the mission are Gin Takejiro, the former Ultimate Assassin of Class 28, and Sam Thacker, the former Ultimate Soldier. Together, the two are able to infiltrate and fight their way through the embassy, and rescue the hostages.

1982

  • Yuusuke Togami is born.
  • June 30: Jin Kirigiri is born.
  • September 29: Koichi Kizakura is born.
  • November 17: Seikatsu Suzumu is born.

1987

  • Suzuhiko Otsuki is born.
  • April 10: Daisuku Bandai is born.
  • November 6: Toranosuke is elected the 74th Prime Minister of Japan.

1988

  • May 12: After a mounting number of scandals and rumors of political corruption, Toranosuke steps down from office a disgraced man, having served barely six months.

1990

  • Ichirou Togami is born.

1991

  • May 8: “Great Gozu” is born.
  • August 9: Haiji Towa is born.
  • The asset bubble bursts, leading to a sudden sharp decline in real estate prices and beginning a financial crisis all across Japan. Many are quick to blame Toranosuke, despite the multiple factors that contributed, such as uncontrolled lending.

1993

  • January: After a year of severe economic downturn, businesses such as the Togami Corporation and Towa Group successfully restore the economy, while many Hope’s Peak graduates take the opportunity to begin producing new goods and providing new services. These circumstances come together and save Japan from what would have otherwise been a decades-long recession.
  • July 25: Yasuhiro Hagakure is born.
  • Misaki Yokozawa is born.
  • Suibuki Yokozawa is born.
  • Jirou Togami is born.
  • Yuichiro Okumura is born.

1995

  • April 14: Juzo Sakakura is born.
  • May 3: Chisa Yukizome is born.

  • Yoru, Asa, and Hiru Togami are born.
  • March 31: Miaya Gekkougahara is born.

  • October 31: Karma Graves is born. Her mother dies during labor and her father, blaming her for causing it, keeps her locked in the basement.

2001

  • Takumi Hijirihara is born.
  • May 31: Komaru Naegi is born.

2002

  • Kanon Nakajima is born.
  • April: Suzuhiko attends the 65th class as the Ultimate Hitman.
    • After his wife leaves without much of an explanation, Maverick convinces Naizen that she had been cheating on him for two years and that she never even loved him. Overcome with despair, Naizen hangs himself.
  • September 4: Yuta Asahina is born.

2003

  • April: Daisaku attends the 66th class as the Ultimate Farmer.
    • Kyoji attends Ukishima Elementary School.

2005

  • April: Mikan attends Ukishima Elementary School. At some point during this year, when a bully shoves her head into the school fountain, Kyoji intervenes and ends up injured. She takes him to the infirmary and treats his wounds.
    • Ichirou attends the 68th class as the Ultimate Surgeon.

2006

  • Nagito and his parents go on a family vacation at San Cristóbal Island in the Galápagos archipelago. When the vacation was at an end, their plane ended up being hijacked. Both the hijacker and Nagito's parents were killed in front of him after a small meteor, the size of a closed fist, crashed into the airplane, leaving him to inherit all of his parents' fortune.
  • April: Great Gozu attends the 69th class.
  • April 1: Monaca Towa is born.
  • May 7: Masaru Daimon is born.
  • June: Anastasia Storm is returned custody of Maverick.
  • June 13: Kotoko Utsugi is born.
  • October 23: Nagisa Shingetsu is born.

2007

  • February 29: Jataro Kemuri is born.

2009

  • Toranosuke Ishimaru dies, aged 55.
  • August 12: Tamiko Takai is born.

2010

  • Miaya's father is killed in a construction accident. Knowing how badly it affected her, her mother tries to encourage her while bottling up her own emotions. In response, Miaya begins giving her own mother therapy sessions, as well as taking her clients for her.
  • April: Jirou attends the 73rd class as the Ultimate Karate Master.
  • October: Maverick convinces Shinji Sugita, the mentally ill brother of his then-girlfriend Haley, to go on a shooting spree in their school. Haley is severely injured in the event.

2011

  • March 11: The Tōhoku Earthquake hits Northeast Japan, killing almost 16,000 people. It is the most powerful earthquake in Japanese history and the 4th most powerful ever recorded, registering 9.1 on the richter scale.
  • April: Kyosuke, Chisa, Juzo, Rogue, and Daisuke attend the 74th class.
  • May 16: Haley Sugita gives birth to Maverick's daughter, and gives her up for adoption. Maverick has no clue that the child exists.

2012

  • Nagito ends up being kidnapped by a serial killer, who attempts to hold him for ransom, but finds out that nobody will pay and leaves him for the police. In the garbage bag he was stuffed in, Nagito finds a lottery ticket that wins him 3 million yen.
  • During a family vacation to Europe, Mukuro disappears. While it's assumed she was kidnapped, she actually joins up with an elite mercenary group based out of the Middle East known as Fenrir.
  • April: Kyoji, Maverick, Miaya and Kin attend Hope’s Peak 75th class.

2013

  • By this year, Kyoji has found cures for 109 genetic diseases.
  • Nagito is diagnosed with lymphoma and frontotemporal dementia. Doctors give him between six months and one year to live. Later, he is selected to attend Hope's Peak Academy as part of the Ultimate Lucky Student lottery.
  • After spending 13 years locked in the basement by her father, Karma is rescued by The Agency.
  • January: The Reserve Course is established, allowing talentless students to attend the school for expensive entrance fees. This is supposedly done to keep the school running, but is actually all to finance the Izuru Kamukura project.
  • February: The incident of Class 75 occurs. Roughly half the students are hospitalized. Miaya suffers an incomplete spinal cord injury and is ruled unlikely to walk again.
  • April: The 76th class attends Hope’s Peak.
  • Summer: Mitsuru Nakamura dies of Glioblastoma Multiforme.
  • September: Kyoji drops out of Hope’s Peak Academy.

2014

  • At some point during this year, the Ultimate Impostor begins referring to himself as "Maro."
  • April: The 77th class attends Hope’s Peak. Daisuke becomes a teacher at Hope's Peak. Hajime Hinata, Natsumi Kuzuryu, and Honami Sato all attend the Reserve Course. Chisa and Juzo return to Hope’s Peak to work as a teacher and head of security respectively, but are secretly doing research on the school.
  • June: Naomi goes to live with her uncle Koichi. Natsumi is killed by Sato. Shortly afterward, Sato is killed by Fuyuhiko and Peko. Hajime Hinata is transferred to the main course.
  • August: Jabberwock Island announces that, after three decades of declining profits and storm damage, they will be closing down at the end of the year.
  • October: In order to get the practical exams cancelled, Nagito sets up a plan to get the building cleared out under the guise of a terrorist threat. However, thanks to a series of events involving Seiko and Ruruka, the building ends up being destroyed. Seiko, Ruruka, and Sonosuke are all expelled and Nagito is suspended for a few months.

     The Predespair Kids, 2015- 2016 

2015

  • Mukuro returns to Japan.
  • Juzo is fired from his position. Kyoji returns to Hope’s Peak under the fake name Ryotaro Otashi. He gets a job as a reserve course health teacher and continues the spying operation.
  • April: The 78th class attends Hope’s Peak Academy.
  • May: The Giboura School Massacre occurs. Takumi hides in a locker as Mukuro slaughters everyone inside the school. He and his best friend, Shuji Fujigawa, are the only survivors of the event.
  • December 16: Class 78 sets up an ask blog by request of the school.
  • December 31: Class 78 holds a New Year’s party. It doesn’t go well for everyone when Hiro spikes the punch.

2016

  • January: Kyoko and Byakuya begin investigating the infamous serial killer Genocider Syo, and find evidence that suggests it’s actually Toko.
  • February 14: Kyoko and Makoto begin dating.
  • The Hope Games take place. Class 78 is split up into teams of two and compete in various challenges.
    • Mukuro unintentionally sends Taka into an emotional crisis during the Truth or Dare challenge, causing the games to be put on hold for a while until the situation is resolved. Her guilt over causing this is what sets the stage for Mukuro deciding to turn against Junko.
    • Mondo and Taka come in first place.
    • Mondo and Taka begin dating.
    • After the end of the games, Headmaster Kirigiri requests Class 77 be made part of the ask blog project.
  • March 26: Chiaki Nanami is created by Chihiro and Kazuichi and joins the 77th class.
  • April: The 79th class attends Hope’s Peak Academy.
  • Sometime during the Hope Games, Rogue Kimyona returns to the school to visit the students.
  • Summer Vacation begins. Many students in Class 78 return home while Sonia brings her classmates to Novoselic.
    • Kyoko, Celeste, Byakuya, Leon, Sayaka, Mukuro, and Junko all stay at the school while the rest head home.
    • Junko also brings Monaca to visit the main school.
  • July 2: The Incident of Hope’s Peak occurs. On the roof of the school, Rogue renounces her affiliation with Junko, who immediately tries to kill her. Mukuro and a few other students arrive to protect her, only for Junko to pull out a silenced handgun and threatening to kill them all. When they attempt to fight back, Junko calls Mikan up to the roof, who (falsely) reveals herself to be a Remnant of Despair. She manages to prolong the situation long enough for Nagito, Akane, Kyoko, and Kazuichi to arrive on the roof in time to stop them. Junko’s identity as Ultimate Despair is revealed and she flees the school.
  • Shortly after this incident, Kyoji is ordered to create a clone of Junko for either infiltration or distraction purposes. Made from the DNA in one of Junko’s hairs merged with an egg cell provided by Miaya, the clone is dubbed Ryouko Otonashi. Unfortunately, the methods used to accelerate her physical aging cause damage to her hippocampus, leading to anterograde amnesia. Yasuke is assigned to be her caretaker while Chisa and Tengan forge documents for her.
  • August 9: School resumes. Ryouko is admitted into the 78th class under the claim that she was a student whose grades had slipped, but she’d gotten them back up.
  • August 19: Hiyoko is found dead in the gym, followed not long afterward by Yasuke, whose body is found floating in the pool. After a lengthy investigation, the killer is found to be Celeste, who also reveals herself to be a Remnant of Despair. She pulls out a gun and flees the school, only to be sniped by Mike. Overwhelmed by these events, Chihiro leaves the school.
  • October 16: Chihiro returns to the school.
  • October 26: The Fall of Hope’s Peak occurs. The school is invaded by Ultimate Despair and an army of Monokumas.
    • Ibuki, Kazuichi, and Chihiro all reveal themselves to be Remnants of Despair.
    • Junpei reveals he was planning on betraying the despairs all along.
    • Kyoji reveals himself as a member of the Future Foundation.
    • Ryouko, Nagito, Maro, Hifumi, and Sakura are all murdered.
    • Kazuichi commits suicide rather than harming Sonia.
    • Yasuke reveals he faked his own death with assistance from Junko, and renounces his affiliation with both Ultimate Despair and the Future Foundation.
    • Ethos loses an arm in an attack by Mike.
    • Future Foundation forces send a rescue helicopter to the school, saving many students and taking them to their island headquarters.
    • The remaining survivors from Classes 77, 78, and 79 scatter.
    • Hope’s Peak Academy is demolished by the despairs, killing 2,379 people still inside.
    • Maverick murders Ted, officially beginning his crusade to eliminate all the former members of Class 75.

     The Despair Kids, 2016- 2017 

2016

  • November: People close to many of the students in Class 77 and 78 are kidnapped and taken to Towa City.
    • At some point, Towa Group constructs the artificial island of Towa City. It becomes a haven for refugees of the Tragedy.
    • Most of America is taken over by the despairs. The remnants of the sane population flee to New England.
    • Canada falls to a coup d'etat and all laws are rendered null and void.
    • China breaks up into four states.
    • The European Union declares war on Russia and also begins instigating an ethnic cleansing of North Africa.
    • South America is consumed by civil wars.
    • The Remnants of Class 77 and 78 form a small community of survivors in the sewers beneath Tokyo.
    • Class 79 takes refuge in an old mansion.
  • November 13: The events of The Despair Kids begin. Miaya sets up another ask blog in an attempt to reach survivors of the Tragedy.
    • By this point, the number of despairs worldwide has climbed to 4.5 billion.
    • Kyoko assembles a team to rescue the captives. The group takes two helicopters to Towa City, but one of them is shot down by a rocket. Luckiy, they're rescued by Class 79.
  • December:
    • While fighting Mina Reizo, Maverick receives an email from Junko that contains pictures of his daughter's body.

2017

  • January: Kyoko's team ends up stranded in Towa City, where the Warriors of Hope are wreaking havoc on the populace and they've been separated from the rest of their class.
    • In an attempt to get communications back up across the city, the team goes to a radio tower to take out the jammer. They succeed, and another mission begins to rescue the captives.
  • March:
    • At the end of their mission to rescue the captives, the team is met by Enoshima, who reveals that Monaca was able to bring back four people from the dead: Nagito Komaeda, Celestia Ludenberg, Kazuichi Souda, and Natsumi Kuzuryuu. All four are indoctrinated into the Ultimate Despair group, seemingly completely believing in their idealogy.
    • Shaken by these events, the Future Foundation decides to throw a party in an attempt to cope. Class 79-A throw their own party separate from the one most other members are in, and while the former group plays the King's Game, the latter play Truth Or Dare. Almost everyone gets really, really drunk.
    • After the party, the group wakes up in an undisclosed location, having been kidnapped by Yuuko Mori and forced to participate in a series of challenges. The events and their victors are as follows:
