• The death of Mario, especially the funeral, and later Luigi's Heroic Sacrifice to save him.
• The fact that the Koopas were only revealed to be innocent after they were killed in horrific ways. At least it turns out to be a dream anyway, so none of this misplaced vengeance actually happened.
• At the beginning of Part 4, Mario suddenly stops and reminishes the happy times he had with Luigi, and he even cries in that scene. He just lost his twin brother, and wants to avenge him.
