Mother Mother: Music to Dance and Cry To.

  • "Ghosting". It's a peaceful and warm-sounding acoustic song that makes it clear the narrator is doing the right thing by resolving to leave the one he loves alone, but it's still easy to tear up on his behalf, especially on his final soft admission that "You don't need me".
  • "Happy" is a slow, resigned song about depression. The broken vocals, lyrics about hopeless listlessness and anhedonia and desire to be left alone, and ultimate declaration that "happy ain't enough" are... very much liable to get to a person who's been there.
  • "It's Alright" has an ultimately positive message, with the chorus implicitly urging the listener to show themselves some understanding and resist their self-loathing impulses along with the narrator of the verses; but not only is it capable of serving as a more positive form of tearjerker in that light, the bridge vulnerably laying bare the frequent, frightening core of that self-critical mentality can cut deep.
    I don't wanna know who I am
'Cause heaven only knows what I'll find
I don't wanna know I'm not capable of coming out alive
  • "Ball Cap". Sweet Jesus. It has lyrics where the narrator describes themselves as “tied up in knots, like the brambles and the weeds” and “dumb-faced”. Ryan sounds like he’s about to cry in the last verse.
I like the people, standing on the street
    'Cause they are dumb-faced
    Dumb-faced just like me
They're asking, "What are we supposed to do?
We got our left foot in our right shoe"
    Oh, what to do, yeah
