- Dave makes a few references to The Lord of the Rings, by saying Aaron is the Sam to his Frodo, and the Gandalf to his Bilbo. After Aaron gets two of his fingers bitten off, Dave goes, "Just like Frodo!"
- Also doubles as an Actor Allusion. James Franco is an admittedly huge J. R. R. Tolkien fan, even going so far as to challenge other huge Tolkien fan Stephen Colbert to a Tolkien trivia contest on The Colbert Report twice. Franco lost both times.
- Dave's Tell All book (aptly named, "Telling All") is subtitled "There And Back Again," which is the title of Bilbo's book in Lord of the Rings chronicling his adventures in The Hobbit.
- Aaron's fingers are bitten off in the control room by a North Korean whose teeth strongly resemble Golum's. In fact, Aaron's entire fight in the control room is full of visual shout outs to Frodo and Golum's fight in Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's Return Of The King
- When Dave talks about people wanting to eat feces on his show, he quotes the line "Mangia! Mangia!" from the 1975 controversial Italian art film Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom.
