Zaero (alternatively named Zaero - Stroggos mining colony supplement) is an unofficial Expansion Pack for Quake II released on 1998 in physical CD format. It was developed by Team Evolve and published by Macmillan Digital Publishing.

The pack takes place after the events of the main game. The Strogg managed to recover from Bitterman's impactful punch that represented the death of the Makron, and are now setting their sights on Earth for retaliation. You are a marine called Zaero-1, part of the elite fighter squadron Zaero and it's your task to battle the new Strogg Rebellion.

The levels that comprise the pack are the following:

  • Unit 1: "Outer Perimeter", "Installation".
  • Unit 2: "Shield Control", "Mining Depot", "Administration Center", "Research Lab".
  • Unit 3: "Pipeline Junction", "Flow Control Station", "Extraction Pump".
  • Unit 4: "The Gateway", "The Gathering", "Waste Combustion", "Energy Transformation", "Filtration System".

With the physical CD long gone, a version of this mod was eventually uploaded by Team Evolve themselves to their servers. With Team Evolve's website being long gone, the mod can now be downloaded on ModDB. In addition, Yamagi (of the Yamagi Quake II sourceport fame) maintains a repository on Github with the source code of the mod (licensed under SDK, unlike most of Yamagi's offerings which are instead licensed under the GNU General Public License 2+).

This pack shows examples of:

  • Ability Required to Proceed: The Clearance Pass obtained in "Installation" is required to exit the first unit in "Outer Perimeter".
  • Bag of Spilling: Right before your battle with the Final Boss, you lose your entire arsenal. You need to pick up everything in the arena and avoid getting silenced by the boss.
  • Back from the Brink: Inverted, this time it's the Strogg who are retaliating against the human colonies set on Stroggos in order to reap their resources out.
  • Broken Bridge: Access to the second unit is locked behind a door that requires a Clearance Pass (obtained in "Installation") in "Outer Perimeter".
  • Charged Attack: The Sonic Cannon deals more damage the longer the fire button is held.
  • Creator Cameo:
    • Some of the buttons across the levels have the Team Evolve logo on them.
    • The minerals that the human colony are extracting are named "Steedium", after Paul Steed, character designer for Id Software.
  • Power Nullifier: One of the new pickups is the EMP Nuke. As its name implies, it disables all machinery on a specific radius, specifically preventing enemy (in single-player) and other players' (in Deathmatch) weaponry from working for a short time. So, naturally, the Final Boss also has a similar device.
  • Sniper Rifle: An actual sniper rifle, complete with zooming sight, was added to the game, alongside the Railgun. It also uses Railgun ammo.
  • Teleporting Keycard Squad: "Outer Perimeter": Opening the entrance to "Installation" spawns three Flyers from the ceiling above.
