Tropes

  • Bittersweet Ending: As expected, David kills Goliath, which saves a lot of innocent people and causes Xena to mourn a friend.
  • Due to the Dead: Giants don't bury their dead. It's considered an honor to leave the bodies above ground. Also, in the end, Xena memorializes Goliath.
"Goliath, I know you can hear my thoughts. I hope you're with your family. When I think of you, I'll remember Goliath, the great warrior and the loving husband... and my friend."
  • Foreshadowing: Before dying, Goliath says that Gareth is still out there.
  • I Owe You My Life: Goliath saved Xena's life at the expense of his family's.
Goliath: I think I helped you enough for one lifetime.
Xena: I owe you my life, Goliath—not the lives of others.
  • My Greatest Failure: Gareth killed Goliath's wife and son while he was helping Xena. Goliath works for the antagonists because they can tell him where Gareth is.
"For the last ten years, I've had to live with the nightmare of losing my family. And the only dream I've had is to kill the man that took them from me. This job will give me the money to track him down."
  • Punch-Clock Villain: This is just a job as far as Goliath is concerned. Thinking that way helps him ignore the plight of those he's hurting.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: A giant is most vulnerable right above the bridge of the nose. A clear shot will take them down easily.
