Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S 5 E 7 Hybrid Creatures

Go To

Laszlo's experiments with Guillermo's blood have resulted in the creation of several animal-human hybrids. Laszlo wants Guillermo to get rid of them, but Guillermo grows fond of the creatures and can't bring himself to do so. Meanwhile, Nadja is still suffering from the hex and tries to get rid of it by volunteering as a teacher for new immigrants in little Antipaxos. Then she meets a supposed magical woman who can help her, and leaves her class in the care of Colin and Nandor, who take their students to a museum where they encounter an exhibit about Nandor.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Anti-Mentor: Nadja's attempts to teach the new immigrants about American culture are quite dubious to say it lightly. She even admits that she's not very good at this teaching job. Colin Robinson and Nandor are not much better; Colin because he just uses the class as an excuse to feed off his students, and Nandor because rather than helping the students integrate into American society he only tries to teach them about the history of his country.
  • Beast Man: The creatures Laszlo made with his experiments are all antropomorphic animals.
  • Berserk Button: Nandor is not amused at how incorrect the museum's information about him is, but what truly sends him flying into a fit of rage is the fact they think he was a virgin.
  • Cool Teacher: Colin Robinson tries to become one, or his interpretation of one at least, since it's a good way to feed off people's energies.
  • Eye of Newt: This is one of the ingredients for the potion that Helen the magic woman wants Nadja to collect, along with things like a monkey paw, a grey egg from a red turkey, a petal of wolfsbane, tears on a loveletter, and a snake's nose.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: In the museum, Nandor admires the immigrant exhibit and tells his students how he used to own clothes and items just like these during his journey. Then he realizes that is because these are his clothes and personal belongings being put on display here.
  • Fake Wizardry: Helen turns out to be a charlatan who is just using Nadja to get donuts from a donut shop that she was banished from for harrassing the staff there.
  • Future Imperfect: The museum exhibit featuring Nandor's personal belongings makes quite some mistakes about what these item where for. For example; the supposed "good luck amulet" is actually a key chain Nandor received from his mother.
  • I Ate WHAT?!: Laszlo gives Guillermo and a dog a sample of something undisclosed to drink, then realizes he swapped the samples around and that the sample meant for the dog was, which Guillermo now drank, was dog urine.
  • You Can Talk?: Guillermo is surprised to learn the animal-human hybrids can talk.
