What if Jane Foster had lifted the Hammer of Thor?

Well, first she'd get cancer, then Thor would lose his self-confidence and prove unworthy, so Jane would pick up the hammer to take up his powers...

No wait, sorry, wrong script. Let's try again:

In some alternate universe, Jane Foster accompanied her boyfriend Donald Blake on his trip to Norway, and discovered the strangely small-scale alien invasion along with him. It was she who stumbled into the cave where Mjolnir lay, and she proves worthy to wield it, becoming a female Thor and taking on the superhero name 'Thordis' (the name of a Norwegian girl she met in nursing school, apparently), taking on the invaders and Loki, who hasn't yet got the memo that Thor's a girl now.

Back in Asgard, Odin does a double take when he realizes that Donald Blake never found the destiny stick. The whole purpose of 'Donald Blake' was to give Thor some experience being human before giving him his powers back via Mjolnir. But now, Donald Blake remains a normal guy, and the lady running around tossing hammers at people has no actual connection to Asgard. That's one plan that needs a big re-doing.

In the meantime, Thordis does the superheroine thing, becoming a member of the Avengers much like the original Thor. Donald Blake keeps on living a normal life, until he saves a girl from drowning. The girl is Sif, Thor's wife in Norwegian mythology, who came to Earth looking for him. She heals Blake's leg, and the two go out on a date. And of course they have to fight Loki for it (along with Thordis), because that guy can never let anyone have any fun.

When returning Loki to Asgard for divine time-out, Thordis, Blake, and Sif get caught up in Ragnarok, which they help defeat because superheroes. It's what they do. In the aftermath, Thor gets his hammer back and reunites with Sif, while Jane, as a reward for making a surprisingly good Thor, is made a goddess and hooks up with Odin (apparently Frigga is dead or something, as the Watcher assures us that this Odin is unmarried).

What If... Jane Foster Found the Hammer of Tropes?

  • Action Girl: Jane as Thordis is as much an action hero as the mainstream Thor.
  • Badass Normal: Even though he did not retrieve Mjolnir to regain his true form as Thor until the end, it didn't stop Donald Blake from throwing down on Loki despite the sheer difference in strength between a mortal and an Asgardian.
  • Deity of Human Origin: Jane's reward for being such a good Thor is to become a goddess in her own right.
  • Hot God: Jane as Thordis is quite beautiful as Hank Pym can attest to as he was mesmerized by her even though Janet van Dyne is nearby.
  • Pair the Spares: Jane with Odin gives off this impression.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Thanks to Sif's healing magic, Donald Blake can properly walk without his cane.
