Tropes

  • A Bloody Mess: The "blood" that Marluru saw as proof of Captain Tatsumi getting harmed turned out to be ketchup which Tesshin spilled when he was eating a hot dog for lunch.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Marluru talks directly at the audience at the beginning of the episode
  • Breather Episode: Outside of some background major events involving Ignis, this episode is a parody of murder mysteries and detectives starring Marluru trying to find out the mystery of Captain Tatsumi's disappearance instead of an action-packed kaiju fighting episode or one that directly advances the Dark Giants' plot. This is in contrast to the previous episode's rather major changes and the next episode after this which will feature the appearance of Absolute Tartarus and Absolute Diavolo.
  • Clueless Detective: The main comedic draw of the episode is the sheer silliness of Marluru's antics as he tries and fails to be a serious detective, which is compounded when it is revealed that there was no mysterious disappearance to begin with and Captain Tatsumi was simply at a meeting.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Marluru has a detective coat and hat along with handcuffs just in case a mystery or crime happens where he can act upon, which he thinks happens in this episode.
  • A Day in the Limelight: While Kengo, Yuna and Akito receive major focus, the episode features the other members of GUTS Select much more prominently than prior episodes, especially the titular Marluru.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Marluru conveniently doesn't pay attention when Kengo and Yuna blurt out their respective secrets during their interrogations.
  • Mythology Gag: Marluru interrogates the GUTS Select members in a room that resembles the one where the original Alien Metron had a tea session with Ultraseven.
  • Out-of-Genre Experience: An Ultraman Episode which is a spoof of detective stories and murder mysteries, without any giant monster attacks, or even Ultraman in general.
  • Recap Episode: A less overt example than the Deban Show episodes but still counts to a degree as when the characters discuss certain traits of each other or recap events we're shown clips of older episodes detailing said events for the viewers.
  • Red Herring: Played for Laughs. Marluru at the start of the episode introduces himself alongside R'lyeh making it seem like the flower will have some role in the story, only for him to reveal in the last minutes (to the audience) that R'lyeh had no role in this episode as the episode enters the climax.
  • Shout-Out: Marluru's line about the "appearance of child" is a reference to Case Closed.
