Tropes

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Fernando does not appreciate Berta's infatuation with him.
  • Appearance Angst: Charlie is so jealous of Fernando being more handsome than him that he contemplates firing him despite him being good at his job and well-priced. He ultimately decides against it, but instead takes drastic measures to try to look younger and more handsome, like tanning his skin and whitening his teeth.
  • Book Ends: The episode begins and ends with Charlie leaning against his railing, which promptly collapses and sends him plummeting down to the beach. At which point Alan leans over and offers a sarcastic comment.
  • Chick Magnet: Fernando instantly draws the fawning attention of every female who sees him.
  • Dashing Hispanic: Fernando.
  • Celebrity Cameo: Enrique Iglesias plays Fernando, the dashing handyman who challenges Charlie's position as the top chick magnet around.
  • Gold Digger: Chloe is dating Charlie at the start of the episode, but loses interest in him when she sees Fernando due to his better looks. She sleeps with Fernando, but Charlie is able to immediately get her back by reminding her that he's rich. She drops Fernando like a hot potato the moment he offers to buy her jewelry.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Fernando sleeps with Charlie's girlfriend, so Charlie fires him from the lucrative job of replacing part of his deck and gets him a job doing menial work at Berta's house, with the temperature being uncomfortably hot to force him to wear as little clothes as possible while Berta watches.
    • On the other side, because Charlie fired Fernando before he could finish working on his deck, he ends up taking another tumble to the ground when he leans against the railing at the end of the episode.
  • Rich Suitor, Poor Suitor: Chloe has to choose between the rich and handsome Charlie and the poor but incredibly handsome Fernando. She initially goes with Fernando, but on being reminded that Charlie's rich flips back immediately.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Charlie accepts that he's not as handsome as Fernando, and he can't do anything to change that. However, he does have millions of dollars that he can frivolously spend on his female companions, and can just bribe women to date him, which ultimately counts for more than Fernando's good looks.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Charlie goes to visit his girlfriend, and Fernando suddenly comes out of her bedroom with no pants on. Charlie asks if he was about to sleep with his girlfriend, and he quickly latches on to the phrase 'about to'.
