"Remember that story I was saving for later? Well, this is it. And it's all about you, Clay."

It's Clay's tape. We learn the third part of the story of what happened at Jessica's party.

Present Day. Clay's mother lets him know that she will be working late that night. The Bakers have declined to settle the lawsuit and want to move on with the trial. Everyone is expected to receive a subpoena.

Justin is having more trouble at home. He gives his mother the choice of having him stay or her boyfriend. She chooses the boyfriend. Justin leaves with nowhere to stay and ends up at Alex's. Here, a glimpse of Alex's home life is shown. His father is a police officer and is overly masculine. His mother works as a nurse with long shifts.

Flashback. At the party, Hannah tells Clay that she needs to quit her job at the Crestmont to work at her parent's pharmacy. Whilst they're upstairs, Clay bails out of his chance to kiss her.

Present Day. At the school, Mrs. Bradley tells Mr. Porter that she thinks the anonymous note left in her bag was written by Hannah. Mr. Porter tells her to keep it quiet until they can do some more investigating.

As Clay gets to the 'Jessica's bedroom' portion of his tape, Tony says he needs to take a break and get some food. They go to Monet's, where Skye is working. She sits with Clay and reads his tarot cards, whilst giving her opinion on the Hannah Baker situation. We find out that Skye cuts herself but she feels that suicide is for weak people. Afterwards, Tony drives Clay so he can finish the tape.

We see Mr. Porter's home life with his wife and two young children. It's clear that the entire situation at the school is taking its toll on him.

Flashback. Hannah and Clay are in Jessica's bedroom at the party. They've kissed and it looks like it's going to go further. On the tape, Hannah admits that she could picture her and Clay being together and being happy. However, as they started to go further, everything that had happened to her began to play in her head. She screams at him to leave her alone and that after he left, she wished that he had stayed. She does, however, say that Clay isn't on the tapes because he's a reason; just that he needed to be because it's part of her story. She felt that she didn't deserve to be with someone like Clay.

It's there that Clay stops listening. He threatens to throw himself off the cliff, blaming himself for Hannah's death. Tony stops him, talking him down and reassuring him that he didn't leave because he wanted to but because Hannah had asked him to. Tony asks him what would have changed if he had stayed? Clay imagines that night again but this time, he tells Hannah that he won't leave until she tells him what's wrong. He would have told her that he loved her.

Then he breaks down.

Justin finds Jessica hanging out at Bryce's house. When he gets there, Jessica is sat on Bryce's lap. Justin snaps. He grabs Jessica's arm and drags her outside. She yells, begging him to tell her why he's so against her hanging out with Bryce. It's then that Justin says Bryce raped her at the party. Jessica slaps Justin whilst Bryce remains calm.

Tony takes Clay home and is reassured when Clay promises not to do anything stupid. He sits with his mother and lets her know that he will tell her everything, just not yet. Mrs. Jensen tells him that Hannah's case has been fast-tracked and his name is on the list of subpoenas.

Meanwhile, Olivia Baker finds a list in one of Hannah's old shoeboxes. It's a list of names of people who are on the tapes.

This episode shows examples of:

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: Clay has a dream of him finally telling Hannah how he truly felt about her when he didn't leave her to be alone at Jessica's party.
  • Armor-Piercing Question:
    • When Clay listens to the reasoning for his name being on the tapes, he blames himself for what happened to Hannah and threatens to throw himself off a cliff. He dreams of what he could have said to Hannah in an alternative reality.
Hannah: Why didn't you say this to me when I was alive?
    • When Jessica begins hanging out with Bryce in order to make Justin jealous, it causes him to snap when he knows she's in danger. Justin finally tells Jessica that Bryce raped her the night of her party.
Jessica: Why do you fucking care? [about her hanging with Bryce]
Justin: Because he fucking raped you!
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Hannah's reasoning for Clay having his own tape was that he was the nicest person she had met. He wasn't involved in her death but he had to have a tape as she had asked him to leave her alone and that's what he did.
  • Cry into Chest: Clay into Tony's.
  • For Want Of A Nail: When Clay is speaking with Tony on the cliff, he says that if he hadn't of left Hannah alone at Jessica's party, Jessica wouldn't have been raped, Sheri wouldn't have knocked over the stop sign and caused the car accident that killed Jeff.
  • The Reveal: Clay is the subject of this tape however Hannah explicitly says that it's not because he had done anything wrong. Hannah only includes him here because his part of the story is needed to make sense however Clay stills partially responsible.
  • Their First Time: Clay almost loses his virginity to Hannah however her past traumas causes her to freak out and push him away, even screaming at him to leave. Clay does as he's told.
