Return to Recap: The Smurfs.

Jokey Smurf is kidnapped by a couple of entertainers and is forced to commit burglaries by a local thief.

Tropes associated with this story include:

  • Big "SHUT UP!": The Duke of Abelagot interrupts the play the Smurfs put on by suddenly pounding on the table and saying "ENOUGH!" when he realizes that the story of the play is revealing something too close to home.
  • Call-Back: To "The Finance Smurf" as why Jokey would rather steal sarsaparilla leaves instead of money.
  • The Cameo: Smurfette is reduced to this in the story. Gargamel also gets one as he comes across the Smurfs in one of the towns they visit.
  • Eyes Always Shut: The nameless thief of Abelagot.
  • False Friend: Ganelon is revealed to be this to the duke of Abelagot, having kidnapped the duke's son and held him hostage to extort a ransom from the duke. The Smurfs know about this and put on a Show Within a Show to expose Ganelon as a traitor.
  • Never Bareheaded: When Jokey Smurf is suggested by the humans to remove his hat for better stealth, he gets very defensive and aggressively refuses.
  • No Name Given: Neither the thief nor the duke of Abelagot are given any names.
  • Non-Fatal Explosions: Jokey plays a prank on the thief of Abelagot, and then later plays it again on both the thief and Ganelon, with explosives.
  • Palette Swap: Jokey is menaced by a cat who's just a grey tabby Azrael.
  • Show Within a Show: The Smurfs use a play to frame not only a thief who's after the Duke of Abelagot's treasure, but also the duke's supposed friend who kidnapped his son.
  • Spit Take: Ganelon when he watches a play put on by the Smurfs and sees one of the Smurfs impersonating him, possibly revealing him to be a traitor to the duke of Abelagot.
