Recap / The Rookie 2018 S 3 E 02 In Justice

Go To

Due to their criminal actions in the previous episode, Harper and Nolan are assigned to a bad neighborhood to do community outreach. Nolan is enthusiastic about the chance of working with the people, Harper is less than enthusiastic. Harper is more focused on creating food for her kid's bake-off. Eventually, Nolan and Harper destroy a meth lab in the area as well as rescue several contractors kidnapped to make it.

Officer Chen's Alleged Car is also stolen by what turns out to be a teenage runaway who is living out of it. She tries to help her out while Bradford says she's adopted a "puppy." West gets off to a bad start with his new training officer, Doug Stanton, after an initially positive response. Doug turns out to be extremely hostile with minorities and interprets them all as being gang members.

Lopez's first case as a detective is a difficult one as someone broke in to use a funeral home to incinerate a body. She later discovers that the body is one of many burned on the orders of a dangerous LA gang.

  • The Alleged Car: Chen's car doesn't lock and barely runs due to being an old clunker she's had since college.
  • Author Tract: Systemic racism is something that has dogged Los Angeles and can't easily be solved.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Doug Stanton turns out to be an incredibly racist and condescending cop.
  • Condescending Compassion: Doug's initially pleasant attitude to Officer West is due to the fact that he is a fellow cop and "one of the good ones."
  • Naïve Newcomer: Nolan comes off as this when dealing with the history of racism and police distrust in the neighborhood.
  • Not Quite the Right Thing: Nolan's attempts to reopen a local park struggle with the fact it's a hang out for drug users and pushers.
  • Rabid Cop: Doug is a Downplayed Trope as he's not necessarily violent but incredibly threatening as well as insulting to minorities.
  • White Savior: Nolan is called out for having this sort of attitude.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Nolan's attitude to fixing the problems of the neighborhood due to being a contractor and not a policeman who views it as a crime zone.
