  • Artistic License – History:
    • Gunny Haney didn't have a breakdown, he simply realized he was too old to keep up with the rank-and-file and asked to be reassigned from the front.
  • The Bus Came Back: Juergens makes a reappearance after having disappeared after Episode 3. While wounded and being carried on a stretcher, he's still alive.
  • Camping a Crapper: An unintentional instance. Jay steps into a cave to take a crap and discovers two Japanese soldiers inside it. He makes it out in time, but gets the fright of his life. And accidentally craps himself in the rush.
  • Friend or Foe?: A Marine getting jumped by a Jap at night jumps out of his foxhole without sounding off and gets shot by another Marine. An emotional Gunny tears into the men for this.
Gunny: You don't get out of your hole at night, because this is what happens!
  • Gorn: Aside from the usual violence, we get a shot of a Japanese corpse with the top of his head missing, with water splashing into it from overhead.
  • I Will Fight Some More Forever: Discussed, as the Japanese keep refusing to surrender even when it'd be best for them.
    "What don't they just surrender?"
    "Because they're Japs."
  • Kick the Dog: One soldier starts extracting the gold from a Japanese soldier's mouth while he's still alive. Snafu walks over and kills the soldier before he suffers.
  • Killed Off for Real: Captain Ack-Ack gets killed by a sniper.
  • Kill It with Fire: Womack and co. clear out a bunker with a flamethrower. It's as scary as you'd think.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: If it wasn't already obvious, it's clear Snafu's eccentricities are an act he does to entertain and lead his peers.
  • Pet the Dog: Snafu is kind of creepy, but dissuades Sledge from "collecting Japanese gold" in a moment of anger.
  • Soldiers at the Rear: The engineers that get to come in after the fighting's done get some ribbing. One of them offers to pay money for any Japanese sword or gun the Marines have found.
    • At episode's end, Sledge gets a mild brush-off from a soldier at the rear and fixes him with a glare that shuts him up.
  • Speak of the Devil: An engineer offers money to anyone who can get him a Japanese sword. Later in the episode, Sledge fights a man who draws a katana when his gun jams.
  • Survivor's Guilt: John Balisone is clearly experiencing this in relation to Manny Rodriguez.
