Chapter 9: Dance of Romance

The St. James Middle School dance arrives, and the girls are determined to make the most of it.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Batman Gambit: Sasha gets Luz to ask Anne to dance hoping she'll do something stupid so Sasha can bring in a teacher who'll reprimand Luz for taking advantage of Anne. It works.
  • Be Yourself: Luz is a strong believer in this, and it's the reason why she refuses to fall in line with Sasha's demands.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Luz kisses Anne on the lips while they're dancing, which causes a rift in their friendship.
  • Continuity Nod: The mirror Sasha had Luz carve her initials onto appears again, and Luz destroys it at the end of the chapter.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Seeing Luz imitate an otter gets Anne cooing over how cute she looks.
  • Dance of Romance: In addition to being the chapter title, Luz tries to invoke it when trying to tell Anne how she feels.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In trying to stick it to Sasha and be herself by wearing the otter costume, Luz hadn't taken into account how difficult it would be for her to dance in it.
  • Everyone Can See It: Sasha discovers Luz's crush when she sees her blushing while looking at Anne.
  • Forceful Kiss: Unable to tell Anne how she feels, Luz instead kisses her on the lips. Not only does this shock Anne but thanks to Sasha, Ms. Bryant saw it which gets Luz in trouble.
  • High-School Dance: Middle school, but you get the point.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: The chapter ends on Luz punching the bathroom mirror with her carved initials and shattering it.
  • Stunned Silence: Anne briefly goes into shock after Luz kisses her and Ms. Bryant tells her off.
  • Take a Third Option: Not wanting to wear the clothes Sasha picked out for her but lacking clothes she can wear to the dance, Luz decides to wear an otter costume which has the added bonus of ticking Sasha off.
