Chapter 13: Tomato Terror!

During a delivery run to Tadpole Pond with her fellow apprentices, Luz is recruited to obtain some tomatoes.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: When Amara questions why Lilly cares about Luz so much, Lilly tells her Luz has been much nicer to her and that Amara should try being more like her, which leaves her speechless.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Lilly and Gustav show up to help pull Luz back from the tomato plant trying to eat her. They hold out long enough for Uodeela to arrive to kill it.
  • Fantastic Racism: Amara grew up with her parents telling her that newts were superior to the other Amphibian species. By the chapter's end, she begins to doubt those statements.
  • Harmful to Minors: Nearly getting eaten by the tomato plant makes Luz realize how easily she can die in Amphibia and how Anne, Marcy and Sasha could suffer the same fate and she'd never know since she still isn't sure they were also sent there.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For double-crossing Luz and leaving her to be eaten by the tomato plant monster, Gaspar is knocked down and eaten himself trying to recover the tomatoes he dropped.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Discussed. Luz really doesn't want to wear her stained uniform all the time, but since she doesn't have anything else to wear, she has to make do for now.
  • Monster of the Week: Gaspar. He manipulates Luz into helping him acquire tomatoes only to leave her for dead when she's done her job.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Just like on her second day in the Boiling Isles, Luz spends it having to sell and deliver potions to her mentor's customers.
    • Amara describes Luz the same way Hop Pop described Anne in "Best Fronds": new, unsettling, strange, bizarre, gangly and HORRIFYING!
    • Like Anne, Luz had to deal with citizens from the town she lived near shunning her and ended up acquiring tomatoes from a tomato plant.
  • Off with His Head!: Uodeela defeats the tomato plant by decapitating its three heads.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Lily's Armor-Piercing Response doubles as one, calling out Amara for her attitude.
  • Rip Tailoring: It's mentioned that Luz's tights have a hole around the knee from being scraped against a rock, but not on which leg.
  • Stunned Silence: Amara is left speechless when Lilly tells her she should be more like Luz.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After Luz is captured by the tomato plant, Gaspar claims the tomatoes and leaves her for dead. Luckily for Luz and unluckily for Gaspar, Lilly and Gustav show up in the nick of time.
