Recap / The Nostalgia Critic S 12 E 30

Go To

One of the worst Disney sequels ever! How did this happen to a great... good... decent enough movie?

Release Date: August 28, 2019

Film: Mulan II

We remembered these tropes so you don't have to:

  • Badass Decay: He sees Shang as having fallen victim to this, as he is easily tripped up by all of Mushu's acts of sabotage.
  • Curse Cut Short: The Critic has two nasty words for Mushu, but his lip movements say it all as he is cut off by a commercial break.
  • Deranged Animation: The Critic sees Shang's over the top facial expressions when he yells at Mulan as this.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: The Critic is thoroughly frustrated when Mulan convinces the princesses to follow their own path instead of going through with the marriage, as the entire alliance meant to protect China hinges on it. He completely loses his patience when the film fails to address what happened to China in light of the fact that it never took place.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: ā€œIā€™m the Nostalgia Critic, and dishonor on YOU, dishonor on your COW, dishonor on your WHOLE FAMILY! DISHONOR!ā€
  • Take That!: He compares the plot to that of Brave, putting more emphasis on diplomacy (on top of the arranged marriage subplot) and putting less on the main heroine actually doing any fighting despite being a trained warrior.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: The Critic gets pumped when Mulan and Shang are called forth by the Emperor in the wake of the growing threat from the Mongols, going into song with "I'll Make a Man Out of You" before he finds out that instead of going to war, they're escorting the princesses to an arranged marriage to forge a wartime alliance.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: He feels that the character animation leans into this, finding it to be a much more rubbery and cartoonish compared to that of the original film. On top of Shang's aforementioned facial expressions, he singles out the face Mulan makes during a moment where she laughs as particularly offputting.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: He calls it one of the worst Disney Direct-To-Video sequels, calling it an insult to the original film.

"But I have another duty: to my heart."
