Recap / The Muppets Mayhem S1E1 "Track 1: Can You Picture That"

Go To

Wax Town Records desk worker Nora Signh works to save the company by trying to record a long overdue album from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

Tropes:

  • Chair Reveal: Nora's boss Penny is introduced in her chair with her back to the audience. When she spins around to speak to Nora, it is revealed she is, in fact, a Muppet.
  • Chekhov's Gun: While Nora is out at the record shop with Hannah, she finds an old record of John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me" and fondly remembers the way their dad would always sing to them at night. At the concert at the end of the episode, the Electric Mayhem sing this very same song, with no real way of knowing that it was so important to Nora, which convinces her of the band's "magic" that everyone else feels and renews her commitment to making their album.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the band's van dangling over the side of a cliff with Animal clinging to the front bumper.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • While Nora rides in the Mayhem's van, Janice sneezes at one point in their conversation. It seems like a throwaway moment, but the following episode reveals there's something more to it.
    • When Nora calls Dr Teeth "Mr Teeth", he corrects her "Dr Teeth. Mr Teeth is my father." As we later learn, Dr Teeth is a real DDS, as is his mother, but his father is a dental assistant.
  • Getting Crap Past the Radar: While discussing potential peace offering gifts for Penny to cool her hatred of Dr. Teeth after the sour way their romance ended, Dr. Teeth suggests compression socks and notes that Penny "likes to be squeezed".
  • Hammerspace: Dr. Teeth somehow manages to produce Mai Tais out of thin air while in Hannah's hot tub.
  • Love at First Sight: Animal is immediately smitten with Nora.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The band perform "Can You Picture That?" from The Muppet Movie while remodeling (what they believe is) The Shack. The sequence begins with Dr. Teeth pouring paint onto the camera, the same way he did in the movie.
    • At the party at the Shack, the band can briefly be heard playing "Jungle Boogie". The audio is taken from a video made to promote The Muppets (2015).
  • New Old Flame: The newly-introduced Penny was romantically involved with Dr. Teeth in the past. He's clearly still into her, but she tells him she hates him. She seems to be warming up to him again after he sends her some compression socks as a gift.
  • The Reveal: Zoot is his last name, not his first, and it’s short for Zootowski.
