Recap / The Muppets Mayhem S1E6 "Track 6: Fortunate Son"

Go To

When Dr. Teeth's parents roll into town, Nora must help him deal with their pushy desire for him to be a dentist once and for all. Meanwhile, Moog and Animal have many deep discussions about Nora.

Tropes:

  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Dr. Teeth’s mother is adamantly against him being a musician, preferring him to be a dentist instead.
  • Flashback: Dr. Teeth experiences several of them throughout the episode documenting how he abandoned his dentistry career to join Floyd in making music. At one point Floyd lampshades that it's his turn to trigger a flashback.
  • Ill-Timed Sneeze: In the post-credits gag Zoot sneezes right as he takes the picture.
  • Imagine Spotting: Other characters are able to see into Teeth and Floyd's flashbacks.
  • Henpecked Husband: For most of the episode, Tina Teeth does the talking and Gerald Sr just says "Yup" when prompted.
  • Meaningful Name: Turns out Dr. Teeth's moniker isn't just a stage name. He's actually a fully accredited and licensed dentist, and his last name is, in fact, Teeth.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The music shop Floyd used to work at is called Jerry's, after his original performer, Jerry Nelson. The store's sign says it was opened in 1934, the year Nelson was born.
    • During the flashback showing the band remodeling the bus Lips appears to be wearing the maroon tuxedo the band wore as the orchestra on The Muppet Show.
    • In the final scene, Nora is eating Cröonchy Stars, a real Muppet cereal from 1988.
  • Patchwork Kids: Dr Teeth resembles both his parents in having green skin, a red nose (although his mother's is more pink) and (unusually for Muppets) visible teeth, but Tina has a completely different head shape, but shares his red hair, while Gerald Sr has the same head shape, but brown hair.
  • The Reveal: Several via flashback:
    • Dr. Teeth's real name is Gerald Teeth Jr., DDS, and he comes from a long line of dental workers.
    • Floyd and Dr Teeth first met and became friends after various random encounters in Dr. Teeth's life when he heard his playing his guitar, with the final before his switch from dentist to rock star being implied to have been intentional on Floyd's part due to having seen the Doctor's potential for music.
    • Floyd was actually a real sergeant in the army, hence Sergeant Floyd Pepper, but he was dishonorably discharged from West Point for turning TAPS into a jazz cabaret.
    • Dr. Teeth's famous golden tooth is not actually a tooth at all; it's the solid gold floss case of his great-grandfather that he, Floyd and Animal took with them when they started the band as a bit of financial security.
  • Sequential Symptom Syndrome: Dr. Teeth's "process" unravels exactly as Floyd and Janice describe each phase.
  • Shipper on Deck: Animal seems to have become this for Moog and Nora.
