This episode provides examples of:

  • Bullet Dancing: Statler tries to invoke this in Waldorf, who starts doing ballet. When they try it the other way around, all that happens is that Statler gets a bullet in his foot.
  • Forgetful Jones:
Louis Kazagger: Howdy, sports fans, and welcome to the wild world of Muppet Sports. And you're just in time for the deciding throw in the horseshoe pitch. As usual, I'm here on the spot...
[WHAM! A horse lands on him. Enter a cowboy.]
Cowboy: [guffawing] Awww, I forgot to take the horseshoes off the horse! Am I stupid.
  • Fun with Homophones:
Fozzie: Hey, Kermit! Kermit! This bunch of cows love me! I'm a hit!
    Kermit: Not bunch, herd.
    Fozzie: Heard of what?
    Kermit: Herd of cows.
Fozzie: Sure I've heard of cows! Aah!
Kermit: No, I mean the cows' herd!
Fozzie: Of course they heard, I was talking right to them!
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Discussed by Kermit and Roy Rogers in the dressing room sketch. Rogers talks about how the hero in Westerns wears a white hat while the bad guys wear black hats. Rogers goes on to say that the hero is also the best yodeler, and when he beats Kermit at a yodeling contest, Kermit says that he's going to get fitted for a black hat.
  • No Song for the Wicked: Discussed in the dressing room sketch. Roy claims that the reason he's never played a villain in 189 movies is that the bad guys in Westerns don't get to sing, asking Kermit if he can picture a stagecoach robber singing "Happy Trails."
  • Re-Cut: "Four Legged Friend" was shown in the UK version only.
  • Signing-Off Catchphrase: Kermit, instead of saying, "We'll see you next time on The Muppet Show!", asks Roy Rogers to sign off his way. Rogers says, "Until we meet again, on the screen or in person, goodbye, good luck, and may the Good Lord take a liking to you!"
  • Verbal Backspace: When a herd of cows wanders in backstage, Kermit angrily asks who's responsible for "those crummy cows". When a cowboy reveals that Roy Rogers ordered them, Kermit promptly changes his tune and says that "the little darlings" are welcome.

Cow: Mooo!
Statler: No, "boo"!
Cow: Booo!
Waldorf: Hooray!
Cow: Hooray!
