Recap / The Legend Of Zelda 1989 E 6 That Sinking Feeling

Go To

When Ganon's minions interrupt what should've been a romantic picnic between Link and Zelda, it's their turn to be on the offensive and they storm into his lair to stop him once and for all. However, Ganon has a new magical device: the Overworld Magnet, which can pull objects back and forth between the overworld and underworld. Since the magnet failed to pull the heroes underground, he uses it to transport the entire castle underground so he can steal the Triforce of Wisdom instead, not knowing that the heroes actually have it in their possession.

The episode contains examples of:

  • Ancient Artifact: Surprisingly the Overworld Magnet, which used to belong to ancient wizards and was just sitting around in the furthest cave of the underground labyrinth before a Goriya brought it out under Ganon's instructions.
  • Hollywood Magnetism: The Overworld Magnet can push or pull any targeted object or person into Ganon's lair and back into the overworld, including non-metallic statues and even entire buildings without leaving any trace behind. Granted, it is made of magic, so it gets a pass for ignoring basic science.
  • Hulk Speak: The Goriya manning the Overworld Magnet at the beginning of the episode always refers to himself as either "me" or "Goriya" whenever he talks, which combined with his muscular physique and more animalistic Beast Man appearance, it's meant to make him appear incompetent.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: On top of getting captured and nearly getting squished by the entrance moving underground, Link decides its a good idea to make a pun out of Zelda's predicament - being "too tied up" for a kiss. She's so angry with him that she somehow manages to hoist herself up and start stomping the ground in anger despite her arms and legs being tied together.
  • Moment Killer: What kickstarts the plot. Ganon's minions interrupting a romantic picnic with beautiful scenery was the last straw in the camel's back for Zelda, to the point where she personally takes the Triforce of Wisdom out of the castle so she can head underground and use its magic against him.
  • Smooch of Victory: Hilariously subverted. After the castle is returned to the surface, Link asks to get a kiss for his heroic efforts but makes the mistake of who he wanted the kiss from, and of course, asking right in front of Zelda's Bumbling Dad. Taking the request literally, King Harkinian smooches on him on the cheek instead.
  • Title Drop: As Link and Zelda are leaving the castle with the Triforce of Wisdom, the very thing that Ganon wants, Link laments that he has "a sinking feeling about this", only for the castle to start sinking into the ground right behind them. Obviously, it's no coincidence that it also doubles as a reference to the episode's title.
