Recap / The Legend of Vox Machina S01 E06: Spark of Rebellion

Go To

Welcome to Whitestone, a city that once flourished under the glow of the Sun Tree — now, a veritable necropolis. Even in these dark times, rebels fight back against the Briarwoods' wicked reign. With their leader now a prisoner of his nemeses, Percival must help the rebels rescue him to rally them against their mutual enemies.

Tropes

  • Black Eyes of Evil: During his confrontation with Captain Stonefell, Percy is revealed to gain these whenever he's under Orthax's influence, indicated by his body emitting shadowy smoke as well as his demeanor becoming a lot harsher and bitter. His plague doctor mask helps hide this effect, but he removes it to let Stonefell know who it was that killed him in the end.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Vex distracts the guards in front of the prison by blowing a kiss and winking. They don't even notice Grog getting behind them to beat them up. One of them is even drooling!
  • Ear Ache: Archie gets his left ear ripped off by hand as part of his torture.
  • Epic Fail: Vax, Scanlan, and Percy's attempts to infiltrate the prison's back door fail spectacularly at every turn, from the inability to pick the lock to Percy falling from a window he tried climbing. You can practically hear Liam, Sam, and Taliesin rolling nat-1s. The only reason they get in at all is when a guard opens the door to empty a chamberpot on Vax and Scanlan.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's somewhat unclear if Orthax's influence over Percy empowers him against the targets of his vengeance. When emitting the tell-tale black smoke that indicates his direct contact with him, Percy's bullets against Stonefell seem to gain greater power, allowing him to blast his hammer's head off with a single shot and painfully dismember him with the other five, and Stonefell's name vanishes from Percy's pepperbox barrel after his demise. On the other hand, Percy was blasting him close-range in cramped quarters with a pretty powerful Hand Cannon, which might have contributed to his increased showing against him compared to when he tried to fight Sylas in the wide-open garden.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: Grog's plan to rescue Archie basically go inside and murder everyone inside, even Archie, who they're supposed to be rescuing.
  • Mythology Gag: The group's trouble with the door in this episode greatly resembles one that gave them trouble in Whitestone in the livestream, with some notable subversions;
    • Unlike the temple door, which had a solid beam on the opposite side of the door Vax couldn't interact with, the door here has a lock that resists every and any attempt Vax makes to unlock it, causing part of his lockpicking tools to break. He outright calls it "a thing of pure evil".
    • Scanlan once again gets his hand cut trying to get the door open collaborating with Vax and a blade. In this case, however, it's from working a dagger as a makeshift lockpicking tool rather than gripping the blade of a shortsword.
    • Scanlan casts a spell to force the door open. However, while Bigby's Hand was what ultimately let the group proceed, its analogue "Scanlan's Foot" fails to even rouse the guards inside.
    • Percy attempts to find a window to get inside while the blade fails to work on the door, much like Vax did to get into the temple. Unlike Vax, Percy falls out and lands on Scanlan and Vax after their last failed attempt to get inside. The way he flatly admits to this says it all.
    • Ultimately, the only reason the group proceeds at all is from a guard opening the door and upending urine on a prone Vax and Scanlan.
  • Not Worth Killing: Subverted. Percy makes sure to let Stonefell know that he considered him the least worthy of his targets, noting that he wasn't looking as forward to his demise as he is his masters', but he still goes through with satisfying his vengeance against him. Messily.
  • Oh, Crap!: Stonefell gets two in quick succession: the first when he realizes Percy destroyed his big whomping hammer, and the second when Percy removes his mask and reveals who he is.
  • Shout-Out: An indirect one shown when Vax tries to lock pick a door and fails at it. During this scene we see a closeup of the lockpicking in action. This is a reference to the lockpicking mini game from Bethesda’s Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as the scene looks very similar to the games.
  • Serious Business: Grog swears vengeance on the Briarwoods for taking all the alcohol in Whitestone.

Grog's prison break plan

Grog's masterplan to break Archie out of prison is to kill everyone and then leave...and kill Archie too.

How well does it match the trope?
