Recap / The Inbetweeners S 3 E 3 Wills Dilemma

Go To

Simon and Tara are on a double date with Will and her friend Kerry. Will balances up spending time with an embarrassing and rather boring girl for the prospect of some action.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Birthday Episode: The plot centres around Neil's 18th birthday party. Even if it cultimates in Will getting dumped, Neil still manages to get laid ... or at least, sucked off.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Kerry initially comes across as a nice girl, but when Will rebuffs her she lies to everyone saying that he was using her for sex.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: While Will started out more or less in the right about Kerry's overreaction to his fairly gentle rebuff, his righteous indignation leads him to outright verbally abusing her in front of a room full of people, and continuing to play the victim even after he finds out her dad had just died.
  • Foreshadowing: Simon says that Tara will be upset about the next day, which will foreshadow the events of the next episode.
  • Huge Girl, Tiny Guy: Will is on the short side in general, but looks downright puny when opposite Kerry. His uncomfortability with their height difference is one of the primary things that makes him want out of their relationship.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Tara bullies Simon into buying an outfit consisting of a green-and-purple button-down shirt, a plaid bow tie, a pink cardigan, and shorts. Simon is horrified by the look, as are all his friends, but Tara and the shop assistant think he looks amazing.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Fashionable: Simon discovers he's not just Tara's boyfriend, but also "her new project" when she gets him to buy a ridiculous but fashionable outfit.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Will was rude to Kerry for shallow reasons, but the fact that her father died recently still doesn't obligate him to date her, or even pretend to date her.
    • Jay's not wrong when he points out Gilbert giving him and Neil a month's detention for saying "Waterside" is a completely ridiculous and unfair punishment.
    • Despite how tasteless was Will’s joke about Jay’s breakup from Series 2, he isn’t wrong that the latter has said far worse things and that Simon and Neil don’t call him out on it, when they tell Will to apologise to a visibly upset Jay (which he refuses to do)
  • Running Gag: It is once again implied that Neil has gone a lot further than Will did with one of the latter's cast-offs.
  • Shoddy Shindig: Neil tries and fails to invite ten friends to his birthday party and the attendees consist mostly of the least cool people at school, and his elderly relatives. The whole thing is mostly ruined by Kerry causing a scene after Will breaks up with her rather unkindly.
