Recap / The Inbetweeners S 3 E 2 The Gig And The Girlfriend

Go To

Simon goes to see a band at a pub, hoping to attract the attention of an attractive girl; Jay claims to have unlimited and immediate access to drugs.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
Will: Is Donovan smoking drugs?! Out in the open?! ON A SCHOOL DAY?!!!
  • Censorship by Spelling: Simon tries this when talking about getting weed for a gig they're going to:
Simon: And most importantly, I need to be someone who does D-R-U-G-S
Will: Shhh! My mum is home.
    Simon: So?
    Will: She can spell.
  • Fake High: Will swallows a quantity of hash without first preparing it for consumption. Despite this it still has some strange effects on him, mostly making his arms twitch.
  • Marijuana Is LSD: Will's experiences after consuming dope. He's possibly demonstrating psychosomatic reactions (especially the random twitching), behaving the way he thinks dope affects you, but on the other hand he did eat a whole lump of resin. What he describes are not hallucinations, but very unusual sensations - 'everything is flat'; 'I think I might be dead' - which is exactly what happens when most people take marijuana, even when they're smoking it: just to a lesser extent, because the amount he ate was ridiculous.
    • This is discussed in the commentary - the incident is based on the real experience of one of the writers, who accidentally ingested marijuana and experienced random arm motions, feeling like everything was flat, thinking he was trapped in a bubble, etc.
    • It should be noted that marijuana has different effects on different characters. Simon and Tara just seem to act like they've been drinking (though Tara may have been concussed). Jay gets extremely paranoid about being arrested, even fleeing when an ambulance turns up. Donovan seems to be more aggressive on dope.
  • Mistaken for Racist: A drug dealer accuses Jay and Neil of racism when they asked him if they can buy some marijuana, assuming that they guessed he was dealing drugs only because he's black. In fact, they know he's a drug dealer because they actually saw him selling marijuana.
  • Stereotype Reaction Gag: When Jay and Neil approach a black man they believe is a drug dealer in a club, he gets offended and accuses them of racial stereotyping. Of course, he is a drug dealer, but "that's not the point".
